Poetry: Death by Ingenuity

Before me is a human masterpiece

Consisting of hundreds of carefully

Engineered and manufactured pieces,

The product of drawn specifications,

Financial analysis and dozens

Of meetings where fat comfortable men

Debated bottom lines and product lines

Before breaking for lunch served on silver.

Meanwhile, the end customers scrape their food

From dented tin cans as they stand knee-deep

In germ-infested water, their taste buds

Dampened by the purifying odor

Of chlorine, trapped behind different lines

In the rain of shells from the howitzer.
